Affectionately known as "the heart of Hermanus" Village Square caters to the needs of residents and tourists alike. As the name suggests, it is conveniently situated in the heart of the old fisherman’s village just above the Old Harbour, in close proximity to the major tourist attractions and accommodation establishments. In fact some of the old fisherman’s cottages still stand on the piazza and though declared heritage sites with original brickwork and walls, are now home to cozy and intimate restaurants – well worth a visit for that special candle light occasion.
One reason why Village Square is the hot spot in town to which everyone gravitates is the open-air waterfront piazza where outside tables and colorful umbrellas provide the ideal meeting place for young and old. In front of the piazza is the open-air auditorium with its kiddies play park, which means that it is also the focal point of the many festivals and special events that take place in Hermanus during the year, including the hugely popular annual Whale Festival when the whole area is transformed into a festive playground.
Another reason is the double-volume arcade that runs through Village Square. This light and airy space is always alive with shoppers who are
attracted to the eclectic mix of retail available from the more than 30 shops. The diverse offerings range from fashion boutiques
to novelty, curio and gift shops. There are also
home appliance stores,
art galleries, .
and a forex exchange with postal service.
Each shop has its own unique character and offers speciality items unlike anything that can be found in commercial shops with mass-produced merchandise elsewhere in Hermanus.
The gastronomic offerings are equally varied, with coffee shops, cafés and bars serving drinks, cocktails, breakfasts and light lunches. The centre also has one of the biggest concentrations of restaurants in Hermanus with over 12 restaurants, where some of the town’s most popular chefs are serving up excellent cuisine, be it for break- fast, lunch or dinner, accompanied by an extensive wine list that features many of the region’s premium award-winning wines.
Whether it’s an authentic thin-based Italian pizza, scrumptious sea- food, sizzling steaks, creamy pasta, hearty burgers, authentic South African dishes, curry and rice , fresh salads, decadent cakes or fine dining cuisine you’re after, patrons can take their pick from the various establishments situated both inside Village Square and outside on the Village Square Waterfront Piazza.
When the weather is fine, you will even be able to spot the famous southern right whales that visit the bay between June and December, either from the piazza below or from one of the upstairs restaurants where extensive glass windows offer panoramic views of Walker Bay.
The centre is open seven days a week and trading hours are from Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 17:00, and Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00. The restaurants open earlier for breakfast and stay open until later in the evening.
